Bardia Jungle Safari

Bardia Jungle is located in the far western Terai region of Nepal, Bardia Jungle Safari is a popular attraction for tourists. The safari is situated on the banks of the Karnali River and is known as the Royal Bardia National Park, covering a vast area of 968 sq. km. It is situated 585 km away from the capital city of Kathmandu and is considered the largest and most untouched expanse of wilderness in southern Nepal. Despite being the largest national park in the region, it remains largely unexplored by foreign tourists.

The park is dominated by Sal jungle, which covers 70% of the area, while the remaining 30% is a mix of grasslands, savannah, and riverine forest. The park contains eight different ecosystems, providing a diverse habitat for a variety of wildlife. The park headquarters are located in Thakurdwara, where the Forest Hideaway is also situated. The surrounding area is home to the Tharu ethnic group, and there are many idyllic villages and fields to explore.

Bardia was originally a hunting reserve but was designated as a conservation area in 1976, and later attained National Park status in 1988. Plans are currently underway to expand the park further to the north and east. The park is committed to conservation, and many organizations are actively monitoring wildlife and breeding habitats. The WWF and the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation have implemented an educational scheme for local people to increase awareness of the importance of conservation.

The park is home to over 30 different species of mammals, 200 species of birds, and many types of snakes, lizards, and fish. Both resident and migratory birds can be found within the park boundaries. Bardia National Park is home to 19 of Nepal's 39 legally protected species, including the One-horned Rhinoceros, wild Asian Elephant, Bengal Tiger, Swamp Deer, Black Buck Antelope, Gangetic Dolphin, and Gharial Crocodile. Endangered birds include the Bengal Florican, the Silver-eared Mesia, and the Sarus Crane. The WWF has recognized Bardia National Park as playing a critical role in the survival of the world tiger population, and the park offers the best opportunity to view the Bengal Tiger in Nepal.
