Would you be interested in exploring a rural village within Kathmandu valley, the capital city of Nepal? If so, Bungmati and Khokana are great places to visit. These typical Newari villages are located about 12 kilometers south and an hour's drive from Thamel, the center of Kathmandu. With a population of around 8,000 people, these villages are known for their rural life and agricultural practices. In the heart of Bungmati, there is a large square where a temple dedicated to Rato Matshyendranath, the god of monsoon and good harvest, stands. Nearby, in Khokana, there is a temple dedicated to the local mother goddess, Shikali Mai.
One of the main attractions of these villages is their traditional way of life. Most of the villagers are farmers, and you can observe them busy with agricultural work. Women are usually seen spinning, while men are crushing oil seeds and performing other agricultural activities. These villages are famous for their typical mustard oil harvesting process, which involves using a heavy wooden beam to crush mustard seeds and extract the oil. This oil is popularly used for cooking and ayurvedic therapy.
You can also witness the traditional architecture of the houses, with red chilies, onions, garlic, and different vegetables hanging on the windows and struts of the houses. The villages provide a glimpse of the simple yet fascinating rural life of Nepal.
After breakfast at Hotel , our guide and the driver come pick you up at 9.00 am. it’s one hour drive from centre of Kathmandu to Bungmati Village. start sightseeing of real rural life of Nepal enjoy the view of the temple of Rato Matshyendra Nath and its square, Temple of Ganesh God of Success and good luck, Temple of Bhairav, Meet local people, enjoy the vegetables hanging on the struts of the traditional houses artistically .take photographs. After this, we should walk about 30 minutes to Khokana Village. Enjoy the view of local traditional houses, enjoy the taste of typical Local Newari Lunch which contain bitten rice, spinach, roasted soyabean, fried potatoes, pickle, garlic Duck chhoela etc. After lunch you will visit rural village with the temple of Shikali Mai. Temple of Indrayani, also you can enjoy the other local activities. On the way back to Kathmandu hotel short visit to Tibetan Refugee camp where you will see the Tibetan people busy with spinning and knitting Handicrafts. Back to your Hotel around at 4.00 pm.
