Would you be interested in exploring a rural village within Kathmandu valley, the capital city of Nepal? If so, Bungmati and Khokana are great places to visit. These typical Newari villages are located about 12 kilometers south and an hour's drive from Thamel, the center of Kathmandu. With a population of around 8,000 people, these villages are known for their rural life and agricultural practices. In the heart of Bungmati, there is a large square where a temple dedicated to Rato Matshyendranath, the god of monsoon and good harvest, stands. Nearby, in Khokana, there is a temple dedicated to the local mother goddess, Shikali Mai.
One of the main attractions of these villages is their traditional way of life. Most of the villagers are farmers, and you can observe them busy with agricultural work. Women are usually seen spinning, while men are crushing oil seeds and performing other agricultural activities. These villages are famous for their typical mustard oil harvesting process, which involves using a heavy wooden beam to crush mustard seeds and extract the oil. This oil is popularly used for cooking and ayurvedic therapy.
You can also witness the traditional architecture of the houses, with red chilies, onions, garlic, and different vegetables hanging on the windows and struts of the houses. The villages provide a glimpse of the simple yet fascinating rural life of Nepal.
